In ceremonies held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) on 20 October and the Institute of Engineering and Technology in London on 27 October, over 300 of the UK's most promising young engineering students were honored with the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships Award. This significant milestone in their engineering journey marked a celebration of talent and diversity.

The 2023 Arkwright Engineering Scholarships received an overwhelming 1,391 applications, underscoring the keen interest among aspiring young engineers to secure a place in this renowned programme. This year, 328 successful candidates emerged from the highly-competitive pool, each identified as having the potential to become future leaders in engineering. Notably, 54% of the scholars were from state schools, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity. Hand-picked for their extraordinary potential, 328 Scholars are set to receive financial support and invaluable mentoring throughout their A-Level or Scottish Advanced Higher qualifications. This initiative is a pivotal part of The Smallpeice Trust's overarching mission to nurture the future leaders of the engineering world.

Andrew Shedden, Director of as pro engineering ltd. and a former Arkwright scholar himself in 2003, had the honor of presenting "The AS PRO ENGINEERING LTD. Arkwright Engineering Scholarship" to Keshav Sheshadri of St. Olave's Grammar School. Keshav, who demonstrated exceptional engineering potential through the F1 in Schools programme, aspires to pursue a career as a Formula 1 Aerodynamicist.

Andrew Shedden shared his perspective on the significance of "paying the scholarship forward" after benefiting from the Arkwright programme in his career, stating, "The Arkwright programme played a pivotal role in shaping my career, and I'm delighted to have the opportunity, after 20 years, to support the next generation of UK engineering talent. Keshav represents the bright future of engineering talent we have here within the UK, and I'm excited to see the impact he'll make in the field."

Steve Robins, CEO of The Smallpeice Trust, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are thrilled to announce these exceptional statistics for 2023. How do you come back from a difficult racing season in motorsport? Aiden Moffat reveals his plan to return stronger than ever for the new 2020 KwikFit BTCC season.

2019 was undoubtedly a difficult race season for Aiden Moffat in the BTCC, with the young Scotsman nearly hanging up his racing boots for good.

The development of 2 brand new Infiniti Q50 NGTC racing cars, combined with sessions to visit a sports psychologist, and the addition of new teammate - 2017 BTCC Championship winner Ashley Sutton - sees Aiden Moffat set to return stronger than ever ahead of the 2020 BTCC season-opener this weekend (Donington Park 1st-2nd August).

Will all that hard work, development and sacrifice pay off in the new BTCC race season this year? With pre-season testing already revealing excellent pace in the new cars, 2020 is shaping up to be a pivotal year in Aiden Moffat's racing career.

as pro engineering ltd. catches up with Aiden as he reflects on his ‘character building’ 2019 season, and reveals the exciting plan he's put in place for 2020!

Despite a strong start, achieving a fourth place finish at Brands Hatch, frustrations with Aiden's Mercedes-Benz A-Class ultimately resulted in a final season position of only 18th, his lowest in five years.

“It was a really disappointing season, largely down to the Mercedes A-Class just not being on the pace,” Aiden explains.

“However, I wasn’t the only driver struggling to get speed out of the package - there were three of us!”

Aiden Moffat’s in-house engineering team made the tough decision to make a risky mid-season car switch, ditching the A-Class in favour of the Infiniti Q50 NGTC car, as the series headed into the summer break.

“We soon realised we had to make a change, and a big one at that,” Aiden reflects.

“It was to effectively sacrifice the 2019 season, but the decision had to be made. We changed the car mid-season with just a shakedown, before heading back out into competition.

The team did a great job to get the new Infiniti Q50 ready in less than two weeks.”

While the decision to change to the rear wheel drive Infiniti was the right one, it took time for Aiden to adapt to his new car.

“The Mercedes was a short wheelbase, right-hand, FWD car. The new Q50 has a longer wheelbase, is left-hand and RWD - so it's a very different car to actually drive!”

So how does Aiden cope with the frustrations and disappointments that are an inevitable part of the racing experience?

“I’ve been using a sports psychologist for a couple of seasons now,” Aiden explains.

“It’s so important. While we know our racing lines and the braking distances needed, so much about being successful is in your head, as well as the equipment at your disposal.

Racing is hard both physically and mentally, so having this psychological support helps on the days when things don’t go as planned.

There was a stage last year where we were gaining nothing in the Mercedes.

We were just turning up and running mid-field, but at least we can now look ahead to the new Infiniti.”

Alongside its many challenges, the 2019 season saw many memorable performances from Aiden, showcasing his great skill as a racing driver.

“There were positives from the season though – both Brands Hatch and Silverstone were good. I got my first podium at Silverstone for P2. We were very fast there and in the top ten in terms of pace in every session.”

And now with half a season of experience in the Infiniti Q50 under his belt, and further developments on the car over the past few months, Aiden Moffat is in a stronger position than ever for the 2020 season.

“It was really difficult to make the decision to effectively write-off a season like that, but we were able to use the remaining rounds of the championship to prepare for 2020, and hopefully it will have been worth all the pain and hard work.”

The Laser Tools Racing Team engineers have been working hard on their 2020 car, improving the weight distribution, roll stiffness and mechanical grip, as well as running a full aero development programme at the MIRA wind tunnel, unlocking every 10th of the new car's race pace!

And the exciting news announced at the end of last year is that they've developed not one, but two new Infiniti Q50 NGTC cars for the 2020 season.

For the first time, the 2020 season will see the Laser Tools Racing Team competing with two BTCC cars on the grid, as they welcome 2017 championship winner, Ashley Sutton, and his engineer Tony Carrozza to the team.

Having been good friends with Ash for several years, Aiden is looking forward to working with him more closely, and reaping the benefits of being part of a two-car team.

“It’s great to be teaming up with Ash – we know each other really well and we’ll definitely push each other. He’s an excellent driver, and together we can really drive this programme forward.”

The exciting developments of the Infiniti Q50 and welcoming a new teammate, along with frustrations from his challenging 2019 season, have left Aiden more determined than ever to triumph in 2020.

“I feel the racing passion and hunger to win again, and that is crucial as we head into this new season!”

What began as a small side-project, originally designing lightweight parts for BMW racing cars, has now grown into an established advance-engineering design consultancy, with a proven reputation for high-quality and lightweight design.

Since the company's inception in 2014, as pro engineering ltd. has been involved in successfully delivering over 30 projects, from bicycle components to advanced, lightweight Formula 1 car parts.

2018 | Mercedes AMG F1 W09 | 2018 Championship-Winning Car

When we started out in 2014, there was no way we could've foreseen that 4 years later we would get the opportunity to work with the all-dominating Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team.

It was an honour to get the chance to play a small part in the design of their 2018 W09 F1 car, the car that would ultimately win the 2018 Formula 1 World Constructor's Championship and secure Lewis Hamilton's 5th Driver's title in the process.

Working alongside the best in the industry, as pro engineering ltd. assisted the Mercedes AMG team with the design of lightweight pre-preg carbon fibre composite parts, tooling & fixtures- focusing on the car's electrical installation and rear wing structure.

The 1.6L v6 turbocharged 1,000Hp car went on to secure 11 Grand Prix race wins, 25 podium finishes and 10 fastest laps throughout the 2018 Formula 1 race season.

2019 | Toyota TS050 LMP1 | 2018/19 Championship-Winning Car

In 2019, as pro engineering ltd. was fortunate to get a second opportunity to work on the design of another world championship-winning race car. This time, working directly with the German-based Toyota Gazoo Racing factory team on their 2018-2019 WEC Le Mans Prototype Hybrid contender.

as pro engineering ltd. was contracted to design and develop ultra-lightweight carbon fibre bodywork for the front-end of the TS050 race car.

Using a conventional nomex sandwich panel construction, combined with extremely lightweight carbon fibre cloths and uni-directional fibres, as pro engineering ltd. delivered a complete package of work from conception through to final design, including all necessary tooling and bonding-jigs.

The 2.4L v6 twin-turbo hybrid electric prototype dominated the 2018/19 race season, winning 7 out of the 8 championship rounds. The season concluded with Toyota's victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans in June 2019, with Fernando Alonso and his team-mates Buemi & Nakajima behind the wheel.

2019 | The Chater-Lea Grand Tour Pedal

It's not everyday a client comes along and asks us to design aspirational products of the highest quality possible.

However, Chater-Lea's vision for re-launching the iconic British brand was clear – to manufacture top-end British cycling components, using the best materials, tolerances and manufacturing processes possible.

Unlike our usual light-weight motorsport projects, as pro engineering ltd. was faced with a new challenge- to realise the Chater-Lea vision by designing very high-quality cycling components, with a focus on precision, durability and longevity. Fulfilling this design challenge was key to supporting Chater-Lea's commitment to quality and their lifetime Owner's Warranty.

Working from an initial design concept, as pro engineering ltd. developed a completely new pedal design ready for manufacturing, using hard, high-strength grades of stainless steel, such as 17-4 PH, commonly found on Formula 1 cars. FEA finite element stress analysis was also used to evaluate the static and fatigue stresses in the pedals, and to reduce the contact wear from the ball bearings.

The project effectively demonstrated how our advanced-engineering expertise can be easily transferred from the world of motorsport, into other industries to design new, high-quality products.

The brand re-launched in 2019 with the Grand Tour pedals retailing at £250.00, selling successfully across the world, in countries as diverse as South Korea, Australia and Switzerland - as well as featuring in many publications like Forbes in America.

2017 | Bloodhound LSR FIA World Landspeed Car

Bloodhound LSR is a supersonic car, designed and built in the U.K. to break the FIA World Land Speed Record, and achieve speeds in excess of 1,000 mph.

Led by Richard Noble OBE, this high-profile British engineering project attempts to overcome major technical challenges and inspire a future generation of engineers across the world.

as pro engineering ltd. was delighted to be involved in this highly-ambitious project and supplied the Bloodhound team with a variety of CNC precision-machined parts - including components used in their EJ200 Eurofighter jet engine.

The Bloodhoud LSR team are well on their way to achieving their 1,000mph target, with the team successfully hitting 628mph in South Africa last year.

2014 | BMW E82 1M Kumho Race Car

A throwback to where it all started! We couldn't compile a list of our most significant projects without including the prolific BMW E82 1M race car.

In 2014, we took on our first project and client, BMW race-prep specialist Gee-Sport, working on this bespoke racing car that was custom-built for the 2017 Kumho BMW Championship.

as pro engineering ltd. designed many specialist motorsport parts, from bespoke anti-roll bar systems, to custom lightweight aluminium suspension arms, pedal boxes and LSD transmission components.

Built to a standard that would rival most professional touring car builds, in 2017 Ian Crisp piloted the RWD 350Hp 3.2L straight-6 racer to 2 victories in its maiden season alone.

To date, the car has racked up a further 5 class wins and set numerous lap records in the Kumho BMW Championship.

As we reflect on the past 5 years, we look back at how the consultancy has grown from just one client and one project, to working on some of the most prestigious and challenging engineering projects across the U.K and Europe.

Rebecca Jackson, GT & Le Mans racing driver, TV presenter and recent mum of twins, talks to as pro engineering ltd. about the allure of racing and women in motorsport today.

In sharp contrast to the growth of women excelling in other sporting pursuits, there is a smaller percentage of women in motorsport competing in the top tiers, compared to ten years ago. For example, of the 900 drivers who have competed in the history of Formula 1, just 2 have been female; the most recent of which, Lella Lombardi, was over 40 years ago in 1976.

There are no reasons why women can’t perform as well on the racetrack as men. In fact, advances in race car design have significantly reduced the physical demands of racing, making it more accessible to women than ever before.

So what are the barriers preventing women from participating at the top levels of motorsport today?

In this article, as pro engineering ltd. catches up with sponsored racing driver Rebecca Jackson to discuss her racing career, rising from club-level racing to competing at Le Mans in 2016. We also discuss her thoughts on the new W Series, aimed exclusively at women, as well as Rebecca's insight into the current state of the industry for women in motorsport in 2019.

A highly competent GT racing driver, Rebecca's career originally began racing Porsches. From humble beginnings in club-level motorsport, she quickly rose through the ranks, claiming the 2013 BRSCC Porsche Production Boxster Championship along the way.

As a relative late-comer to motorsport, competing in your first circuit race in 2011 at the age of 28, what originally sparked your interest in racing?

"I have always loved cars right from an early age. I was pushed around the outskirts of Silverstone Circuit in my pram when I was just 6 weeks old while my father was racing."

"I very much enjoyed spending time with him in the garage at home while he maintained his classic cars when I was a young girl."

"As a family we were not fortunate enough to be able to fund a racing career for me, so I entered motorsport in a non-traditional fashion, setting my sights on some pretty major goals."

You initially started racing at club-level. What was the allure of the Le Mans programme?

"I knew I wanted to race at Le Mans before I even did my first race. It was my dream."

"Le Mans is the most alluring and arguably the most prestigious 24 hour endurance event in the world. As a sports car fan and racer, it is the ultimate."

"There’s no other race like it!"

It’s quite a step up from club racing to compete in an LMP3 car (as used in the Le Mans race). How did you prepare mentally and physically for the demands of prototype racing?

"Yes, my goal was huge and the step up each year was massive! The first time I saw the Ligier LMP3 car that I was going to drive and race, I thought “Wow, little me is going to drive that!” I was almost overwhelmed."

"But, as soon as my seat was moulded and I drove it down the pitlane at Paul Ricard, I realised, being in a racing car is like being in my lounge chair. I’m so comfortable and happy on circuit."

"The combination of the simulator, right mindset and an intense physical training regime, along with a healthy racing driver’s diet ensured I was as best prepared as I could be."

There are many successful women in motorsport – Simona de Silvestro, Flick Haigh, Tatiana Calderon to name but a few. Do you believe there are any reasons why women can’t compete at the highest levels of motorsport?

"I do not believe there are any physical reasons why women can’t compete at the highest levels of motorsport. There certainly were many decades ago, as the cars were extremely physically demanding to hustle around the circuits."

"But modern racing cars, combined with up to date training regimes, means a much slighter build is perfectly suited to racing motor cars. Therefore, men and women can compete on an even playing field."

With estimated costs of around £6.5 million to propel a young driver from Junior racing categories to Formula 1 levels, money is a significant barrier.

Indeed, there are many talented aspiring drivers, both male and female, whose potential does not get a chance to shine due to a lack of finances.

Motorsport is an industry driven by money. What would be your advice to aspiring racing drivers starting out in karts or single seaters?

"Stick with it and follow your dreams. There is always a route to success if you want it badly enough, you just need to look for it and seize every opportunity that comes your way."

However, the absence of prominent female drivers in the top tiers of motorsport may make it even harder for women to gain the financial support needed to progress through the racing ranks.

It’s this barrier which the W Series hopes to address, aiming to provide women in motorsport with the platform and experience to be considered for top drives in high-profile championships, on a par with their male counterparts.

Launched in October 2018, the W Series has already made headlines and it’s fair to say has received a fairly mixed response. What are your thoughts on an all-female single-seater racing category?

"In today’s age, we do not need to segregate men and women into separate racing categories. This is a step backwards, in my opinion."

"However, if we see a female Formula 1 driver emerge as a result of the W series, then I will be extremely happy for that individual."

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us today Rebecca, what can we expect from you for the rest of 2019?

"I have recently given birth to twins, so my focus for the next few months is giving them the best start in life I can. In the Autumn, I will be back on the circuit giving hot laps and I will be taking my babies with me to a variety of motorsport and automotive events - watch out for them on my social media!"

As the winter months draw in and another exciting year of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship well and truly over, as pro engineering ltd. catches up with sponsored racing driver Aiden Moffat and his Race Engineer Federico Turrata, to discuss and reflect on all the highs and lows of the 2018 BTCC race season.

The BTCC is one of the most closely fought series in the world and 2018 proved to be no exception, with no less than 17 drivers taking victories over the 30 rounds. For Aiden Moffat, it was another successful campaign in the Laser Tools Racing prepared Mercedes A-Class, culminating in one victory and a further two podium positions.

Aiden may be still just 22 years of age, but he has been competing in the BTCC since 2013, with 2018 marking his fifth straight season with Laser Tools Racing. It was fitting that he would go on to end the season on a high, with four top-ten finishes in the last five rounds alone.

"It’s good to get more Silverware to add to the collection over the season as a whole and it’s important to reward my supporters and the team with good results."

"As ever there a lot of ‘what ifs’ but that is the nature of motorsport. I should have won at Brands but got hit on the last lap. Donington was very good as was Thruxton, as we were sixth in the championship at that point."

"We struggled at Oulton Park and Croft and then we got the points haul at Silverstone with the win. We know we can always do better, but it has been a good season and working with Alain Menu in the second half of the year was fantastic. He’s a family friend and I’ve known him for a long time, but his experience is invaluable."

"The season had highs and lows. Best weekend for sure was Donington with a brilliant wet qualifying and the double podium on Sunday. Silverstone was mega because Aiden, with a very clever and precise drive, scored his third career win!"

A Good Start in Tricky Conditions for Aiden Moffat
Brands Hatch Indy Race 1: P14 Race 2: P5 Race 3: P21

The season kicked off in the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in early April in suitably damp conditions with Aiden qualifying well, less than four-tenths off the ultimate pace, but with the field so tightly compacted, this yielded 17th position on the grid. The Scottish racer avoided the lap one incidents and went on to open his account with the 14th position finish.

Round two proved to be the highlight of the race weekend, as Aiden opted to start on slick tyres on a drying track. The decision paid dividends, even if he did lose out in the early laps before generating enough heat for the tyres to come into their own. Contact from Senna Proctor later in the race ended hopes of victory, but it was still a fine performance as he took the chequered flag in fifth position. Further contact in the third round masked what had been a strong start to the season, as Aiden headed for the next round at Donington Park.

The First Two Podiums of the Year Come at Donington
Donington Park Race 4: P3 Race 5: P15 Race 6: P3

A great run in qualifying saw Aiden qualify fifth and this was followed up by a strong drive in the opening race that yielded his first podium position of the season after a nice battle with Sam Tordoff and Chris Smiley. Describing it as an ‘important result,’ Aiden went into the next race carrying success ballast, which meant for a tough race ahead of round six on Sunday evening.

From 15th on the grid, Aiden battled his way through the field to make it two podiums from the three starts at Donington – a circuit where he took his maiden victory in 2017. It was an impressive drive as he picked off car after car before slipping past Rob Collard to claim the result after another charging drive.

Not a Happy Hunting Ground for Results at Thruxton
Thruxton Race 7: P18 Race 8: P15 Race 9: P15

The sun beat down on Thruxton for rounds seven, eight and nine, but it wasn’t a particularly noteworthy weekend from the outset, with the extra success ballast hurting Aiden’s pace in the first race. A lack of straight-line speed at the ultra-fast circuit meant that the weekend ended on a frustrating note with a pair of 15ths to add to the P18.

On to the Next One...
Oulton Park Race 10: P33 Race 11: DNF Race 12: P20

On to Oulton Park, a circuit that is tight and twisty and notoriously difficult to pass on. The first two races of the weekend saw Aiden finish 16th before being hit first by Josh Cook and then Dan Cammish. The team worked hard to repair the Mercedes for the final race where he lined up at the back of the field. A start-line crash reduced the race to just 12 laps, but Aiden was able to carve his way through to 15th at the start of the final lap, only for a puncture to cost him further positions.

Contact Ends Croft Hopes
Croft Race 13: DNF Race 14: P16 Race 15: P17

Croft wasn’t a great deal kinder to Aiden with Josh Price taking him out of the first race of the day before a run from 27th on the grid to 16th in the second race. It wasn’t to be however, as contact with Chris Smiley meant Aiden was forced to drop back to 17th position due to damage.

Worth a Gamble...
Snetterton Race 1: P16 Race 17: P13 Race 18: NC

The summer break followed, with a chance to get some testing and development complete ahead of the second half of the championship, which got under way at Snetterton. The U.K. enjoyed one of its best summers in recent memory, but heavy rain made the opening race at the Norfolk circuit tricky.

Aiden picked up some light damage to the Laser Tools Racing Mercedes, but still gained an impressive ten positions to take the chequered flag in 16th place. With conditions drying in the second race, Aiden dropped back a little as he lost the sweet spot on the car setup, but it was a gamble worth a shot and demonstrated the Scottish driver’s desire to take risks with a view of securing strong results.

The final race at Snetterton proved disappointing with contact sending countryman Rory Butcher into Aiden’s Mercedes. Following a pitstop to replace the toe-link, he was back out and set the fifth fastest time of the race, underlining the potential in the car and what could have been...

Great Promise Let Down by Kerb Damage
Rockingham Race 19: P8 Race 20: DNF Race 21: P21

Next up was Rockingham where Aiden took on the services of former BTCC champion Alain Menu as his driver coach. This was to help him in analysing data as well as general race advice and mental attitude. This proved to be a valuable addition to his race preparations.

The first race at Rockingham saw Aiden gain seven positions en route to eighth position, setting the scene nicely for race two. Unfortunately, a great start and gain of three positions came to nothing when he damaged the suspension with a kerb strike, making race three all but impossible from the back of the field.

Moving Up the Order
Knockhill Race 22: P18 Race 23: P13 Race 24: P12

A return to the Scotsman's home circuit Knockhill brought the most difficult conditions of the season by far- very much a case of survival in the rain. Silverstone to follow however, would undoubtedly be the highlight of the 2018 BTCC season for Aiden, as he secured his first win of the season, and the third BTCC victory of his career to date.

First Win of the Season Comes at Silverstone
Silverstone Race 25: P14 Race 26: P7 Race 27: P1

It was a good start to the weekend in race one where he opted to run the harder option tyre, and then focus on races two and three on the quicker prime tyre.

14th position in race one was a good result – quickest of the those on the option tyre – and Aiden made good use of the softer tyre in race two to move his way through the field, before taking the chequered flag in seventh place. The racing gods smiled on Aiden as the number seven was pulled out of the hat for the reverse grid pole position. With just 27 kilos of ballast on board, he knew he was in with a good chance of the win.

A perfect getaway saw him lead the field from the outset before Tom Ingram began to close in and pressure him for position. With a small straight-line speed deficit compared to the Toyota, Aiden was under pressure for the win- especially following a tense safety car period that closed up the leading runners once again.

It was a brilliant BTCC win at Silverstone for Aiden Moffat. Under immense pressure from the start, Aiden remained calm throughout, in what he would describe later as the "hardest race of my life and most special win."

Back to Brands for a Strong End to the BTCC Season
Brands Hatch GP Race 28: P7 Race 29: P5 Race 30: P27

It was then off to the season finale on the longer Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch, and a strong conclusion to Aiden's 2018 BTCC season.

Aiden made his now traditional fast start to gain three positions and run in sixth place whilst fending off the attentions of Sam Tordoff’s Focus. The Mercedes however, was suffering from a power delivery problem and this allowed the Ford to slip ahead in what was still a great tussle for position.

Things were shaping up nicely for the second race as he made further progress up to fourth position, before allowing Ton Ingram through so he could continue his fight for the title. The final round saw Aiden starting sixth and in a confident frame of mind starting the 30th and final race of the season on the option tyre. A puncture whilst running fifth however effectively brought to an end the season with the question... What if?

All in all, another strong performance from the young Scot this year, with a good points haul and the usual misfortunes of motorsport only demonstrating the true potential in him and the car. A fantastic effort throughout the year by Aiden, Federico and the whole team at Laser Tools Racing did not go unrewarded, with the podium finishes at Donington and of course, the spectacular race win at Silverstone, all truly deserved.

Finishing P8 with 218 points, marked another successive top 10 finish in the 2018 BTCC Independent Driver's standings for Aiden Moffat. As the silverware collection continues to grow and Aiden's race pace continues to quicken, we look onwards to the next one and look forward to seeing what 2019 will bring...

"What a weekend that was! The car felt brilliant, the conditions helped actually, because when the drizzle came it made the track quite slippery, the car was quite loose and I really felt comfortable! It was a bit like my oval racing days on difficult surfaces."
