Why Automotive Lightweighting Matters

All automotive vehicles, whether road cars or race cars, vans or lorries, electric powered or internal combustion, are all subjected to the same laws of physics- specifically Newton's 2nd law of motion. The heavier a car is, the greater the force and energy required to move it.

For automotive designers and manufacturers, excess vehicle weight creates serious challenges, with significant performance, financial and environmental consequences.

Increased Energy Demands

The energy density of gasoline is still over 55x greater than current lithium-ion battery technology (13,200 vs. 230 Wh/kg).
For EV manufacturers, electrical energy storage amounts to a serious weight problem, with increased charging times, reduced vehicle range and an increased dependency on mining rare and critical earth elements for battery production.

To achieve parity with their internal combustion counterparts, electric vehicle designers must turn to innovative lightweighting solutions to reduce battery pack size and overall vehicle weight.
High Emissions & Even Higher Penalties

Road cars are responsible for around 12% of total European CO2 emissions. Average fleet-wide CO2 emissions for new cars must drop below 75g/km by 2025, otherwise OEM's face severe penalties of up to €12,000 per car sold!

A 10% reduction in total vehicle weight can result in an 8% improvement in fuel economy, and 0.08g/km of CO2 can be reduced for every kilogram of weight saved.

OEMs must turn to innovative lightweighting solutions now to reduce vehicle mass, improve fuel consumption and slash their CO2 emissions.

10% weight saved from a modern Formula 1 car is equivalent to a 1.85s laptime reduction.

Second to tyre grip, weight is the next most influential factor in reducing laptimes for racing cars. When the margin between winning and losing can be just 10ths of a second, reducing vehicle weight wherever possible guarantees increased all-round vehicle accelerations, improved dynamic performance and a better chance of success for the world's top racing teams.
